4th Annual Earth Day Fair

The Bossier Civic Center was alive with activity on April 16 as approximately 400 5th grade students from Apollo Elementary and Benton Elementary schools participated in the 4th Annual Earth Day Fair sponsored by Keep Bossier Beautiful. This educational event was designed and intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It included a puppet show about saving the wetlands, presented by Calliope Puppets from New Orleans, an art bag competition and 33 exhibitors with booths that provided hands on activities and visual activities for the students to learn about recycling, litter, clean air, forestry, Public Works, art and saving the planet.  Jean Clarkson, Jo Cooper, Patricia Kirkes and Shirley Koval from the Creative Art Connection assisted the students with art projects. The Fair was held in conjunction with National Earth Day which was celebrated April 22.

The students were led to the booths in rotations by their tour guides, ROTC students provided by Master Sgt. Pat Presley, Bossier High School, Lt. Colonel Bartee, Airline High School and Sgt. Martin, Benton High School. Miss Bossier City, Catherine Putnam, was present as the 2008 spokesperson for Keep Bossier Beautiful. Project Coordinator Derinda Soignier, exhibitors, ROTC students, volunteers from the Board of Directors of Keep Bossier Beautiful and other volunteers wore bright yellow and green t-shirts designed by Emily Terry from Benton Middle School. The Earth Day Fair is made possible by a grant from the Bossier Arts Council. Keep Bossier Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and partners with Keep Louisiana Beautiful with litter, beautification and recycling programs.
